Rwanda | Karongi: Isangano Community Radio celebrates its first anniversary


A private-owned local radio station Isangano FM located in Rubengera Sector-Karongi District (former Kibuye Prefecture) in the western Province celebrated its first anniversary on 30th April2012, the station belongs to a group of Karongi residents organized under Isangano Association; It was established on 30th April, 2011.

The project to institute the radio was set up with funds from the American Government though the International Research and Exchange Board (IREX) and the Millennium Challenge Cooperation ((MCC).

Local people in Karongi district affirm that over the last 12 months, the radio has played an important role and is still making an impact in boosting up their socio economic situation through various radio shows. 24 year old Ramazani says he never had a chance to know what was going on in his country Rwanda, not until Isangano Radio came into existence.

During the commemoration, the radio station’s director, Jerome Rwasa, disclosed that close to 1,000 listeners within the area and some parts of neighboring Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo were presently on board. He said the radio plans are to attract more listeners.

“We have already established a website and we intend to relocate to a bigger work station and acquire more sophisticated equipments to improve our work,” Rwasa said.

Isangano Radio is the third community radio station in the Western Province with others located in Rubavu and Rusizi districts.
