Prof. Anastase Shyaka challenges journalists on new media law

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Rwanda Governance Board, Prof. Anastase refuted journalists’ claims that the government dodges local media and disclosed that the government endorsed the Media Law in order to empower journalists.

The professor conveyed the message on Thursday during the meeting that brought together media stake holders and development partners.

“The government is not dodging the responsibilities but helping them to have basic practice and empowering journalists for the benefit of the public, but this doesn’t mean that the government will give up its support” says Prof. Shyaka.

The meeting followed the new law that was signed this month which is already in application and has been published in the National Gazette.

During the meeting, journalists were told that, self regulation will facilitate media practitioners regulate themselves and provide quality work to the general public.

Auke Lootsma the country director of UNDP as development partners said that they are contented for the media law reforms and UNDP is devising a 5 year program that will work with journalists and other developmental projects they support.

Under the new media law, electronic and internet media will be regulated by Rwanda Utility and Regulatory Agency which pledged to treat all media houses fairly and follow up the services delivered to the public.
